Good surface treatment but needs bottom paint
The Fjord 27s were manufactured in the 70s and are thus starting to become upwards of 40 years old. Therefore, it is important that they have been properly maintained. One of the major dangers is that many boats have old engines, which in the worst case may be on their last legs.
- One should mainly be cautious of old 6-cylinder gasoline engines, as they consume a lot of fuel and it is not worthwhile to tinker with them if something breaks down; it is very difficult to find spare parts. It is better to have a V8, as it is simpler technology, says Conny.
But the best scenario is, of course, to find a boat where the engine has been replaced with one.
- An engine replacement on such a boat is no joke; it costs more than the boat is worth. This is the danger with these old boats today; they are not very expensive to purchase, but if the engine fails, it can be horrendous expenses. This applies not only to the Fjord 27 but to all old boats. I believe this is why their prices are dropping; people are starting to understand the costs that can arise quite quickly.
The Fjord 27 has the engine mounted in the middle of the boat and a straight shaft instead of a drive unit. This entails both advantages and disadvantages.
- It is much cheaper with a straight shaft, as you avoid all costs for maintaining the drive. You can also drive slowly and more economically without the boat starting to sway. The downside is that it is more difficult to reverse. If you are inexperienced at boating, it may be unwise to start with a boat with a straight shaft, especially if you don't have a bow thruster, says Conny.
